It was an honour to visit the Commonwealth War Graves Commission plot at the Houghton and Wyton Burial Ground.
Having previously visited the First World War CWGC sites in Northern France and Belgium, it is important to remember that there are plots dotted all over the UK as well.
There are so many important local stories amid those laid to rest here, including Flt/Lts John Philip Armitage and Lawrence Andrew Davies, the pilot and navigator of the Canberra PR.9 that crashed on Norfolk Road in 1977 after engine trouble coming in to land at RAF Wyton.
The two aircrew bravely and selflessly stayed with the aircraft as it went down to control its crash, steering it away from Sapley Park School and other houses where it would have crashed had they bailed out.
The work of the CWGC is so important to ensuring the memory of those personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice is kept alive. My thanks to Mac, Rich and Stuart for their hard work in keeping the plot immaculate.
