“I doubt you’ll be surprised to learn that 1969 was not the cultural epoch of interracial relationships. It was hard, much harder than anything I’ve ever had to go through. They faced prejudice that I could never imagine, but as one might expect they had the strength to persevere and I am hugely proud of them, because they are still together. And this Christmas Eve it will be 55 years since they met and they are still going strong.”
As Black History Month draws to a close I spoke in this week’s debate on this year’s theme of “Reclaiming Narratives” and told the story of my parents, who met over half a century ago, and blazed a trail that many others, including myself, have subsequently been able to follow.
